The New Year PDF Drucken

Tuesday, 3rd of January 2012, 8pm, Sarah

Wow, how strange it still feels to write "2012". So unreal. But really, the last year is over and the holidays are, too, schools started again and the every-day life got me back.

The holidays were really nice. First a trip to the Galleria, a huge Mall in Houston, with my friend Laura, who is an exchange student from Munich. Of course, I didn't wear the right shoes for that occasion and at the end of the shopping day, my feet hurt really bad (shopping day means from 8 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon). But it was defenitely worth it, the Galleria is amazing. Although I didn't buy that much - I already spent too much money on Christmas presents.

Then, finally, Christmas. I like American Christmas, but to be honest, it didn't feel as festive as the German one. Maybe because I missed my family a lot that day. It's strange, too, that presents are opened in the morning. But one thing is similair in every country: There is just so much food! I feel really stuffed after the holidays and after all the coconut cream pie, mashed potatoes and (I'm really proud of that) German "Christstollen" and "Lebkuchen" made by myself. But the fact that it was warm and sunny on Christmas day made me a little bit upset. Of course I knew that before I came here. Well, I wore my warmest winter coat anyways, just to protest.

After Christmas, my family took me to Fredricksburg, Texas, for one night. Fredricksburg is a German settlement and every other restaurant there offers "Schnitzel", German potatoe salad and big Bavarian sausage plates. It was so nice to see all the, surprisingly authentic, German stuff and the influence, Germans had on Texas.

Few days later, New Years Eve was already there. My family celebrated with a sushi party and later in the evening I went to a friend's house. We danced, we laughed, we ate. And at 11pm (because of the time change), we watched the big ball drop on Time Square, NYC and at midnight, the one in Houston. A pretty good ending of the year. I even made a New Year's resolution: I want to loose the pounds I gained because of the amazing American food.

And now, school has started again. And everything goes back to every-day life. An every-day life I learned to love. And although I can't believe, that 2012 really started, what seems even more unreal to me is the thought about going home in only a little bit more than five months. But I guess, I should really start to feel confident with that idea, no matter how hard it would be. Well then, hello 2012.
