Superbowl, Valentines and other Special Occassions PDF Drucken

Who would have thought that February in the United States is so busy? Every week, there is something special going on. And even if not, the American people always find a reason to have a party.

The month started with THE American sport event: The Super Bowl. And of course, one of my friends had a big party where everyone came together, had junk food and watched the game. Cheering for the giants, discussing Madonna's half time performance and after the game, watching the premier of "The Voice", the latest casting show on US television - it was fun, although the football was probably the least important thing that night. I'd love to keep that tradition back in Germany, unfortunately the time change makes it a little bit difficult. Parties at 3am on school days are not that much fun.

Just a week later, another big day: Valentine's day. An event, we know in Germany, too, but here, it's really a big deal. The whole day, you see girls walking around with tons of roses and teddy bears that are taller than their owners. Valentine's day is also not a good day for diets because every friend of yours, every teacher and even your bus driver will force you to take their chocolate (and I don't even like American chocolate, but I don't want to be impolite). Diferrent to Germany (at least most of the time), the day is not reserved for couples. My Valentines were my best friend (male), who got me flowers, a teddy bear and chocolate, my friend (female), who went to the movies with me to see "The Vow" (the best movie for a romantic day like that) and finally my host dad, who got my host mum, my little sister and me super-sweet greeting cards. A lot of people also just give out little notes or chocolate bites to all of their friends. To me, it was just a feel-good day.

Next week will be the time for a festival, that is very unpopular in Germany. Well, at least I had never heard of it before. "Mardi Gras" is a day, mostly celebrated in New Orleans. But because of the high rate of Texans that moved here from Louisianna, it became popular across the border. Louisianna is still bound to its catholic-French roots, therefore the French name. The translation of "Mardi Gras" is "Fat Tuesday" and that's pretty much what it is. On this day, people celebrate the last day before the two months of fasting that catholics practise before easter. The citizens of New Orleans have a big parade and party very excessive - that's why a lot of people think that the real meaning of this day is eclipsed too much. But anyways, this day is quite nice. There's also the traditional cake that is eaten by the whole family. A little plastic baby is hidden in the cake (don't ask me why it is a baby, I honestly don't know!) and whoever finds the baby in his piece is king for one day and gets to bake the cake for next year. Cute, right?

And then, of course, prom is coming up. People are starting to gather in groups and discuss what they're going to do for the after party and girls are spending days at the mall, trying to find a prom dress that hopefully no one else will have. But you really need to be carefull who is in your group: One pregnant girl at my school took her prom groups money - about 2000 dollars -, deleted her facebook and phone number and moved to Louisianna.

But appart from horror stories like that, prom will be an amazing event. I just need to find someone who will take me, since me principal is being a grinch and doesn't let juniors go to prom, not even exchange students. But I've got to go to prom, I've got to find a date! So watch out seniors - I'm on a mission!
